If you suspect a mounting Urinary Tract Infection:
- Eliminate all dietary sugars (refined and unrefined)
- Drink plenty of water (my teacher of mine says 1 gallon per day) to flush your sytem out.
- Drink unsweetened or naturally sweetened cranberry juice (e.g. Apple & Eve, not Oceanspray). Hain makes an excellent cranberry juice concentrate that can be diluted in other juices for sweetness or water if you like things tart.
- Cranactin is a tableted cranberry juice concentrate available in health food stores. Two tablets are the equivalent o 92 oz. (almost 3 liters) of cranberry juice. Take 1 or 2 tablets every 3-4 hours with plenty of water.
- Take vitamin C with bioflavinoids (500 mg every 2-3 hours) or Alacer's Emergen - C with Cranberry 2X per day.
- If you have herbs prepared for you just for this situation, take them now. Otherwise, drink uva ursi infusion (the only easily obtainable antiseptic herb that passes through the kidneys). Prepare by using 1 oz. uva ursi leaves to 1 qt. water and steep 10 hours. Drink 1 cup, (240 mL) every 4 hours the first two days when fighting an active or severe infection. Continue treatment with at least 1 cup 240 mL) daily for three days after all symptoms disappear. The dosage is 1 cup (240 mL) every 12 hours for prevention or mild infection. Do not take longer than 10 days at a time.
- If symptoms persist or your discomfort increases, set up an appointment and consult your primary care provider.

This information is intended for use by patients under the care of Amy E. Mager B"H
To Facilitate the Healing of Sinuses
- Soak your feet in hot water every evening for 15-20 minutes with the water up to a few inches above your ankles. Do this also in the morning if possible.
- Run a cool mist vaporizer with 6-10 drops of tea tree oil. Clean the vaporizer daily.
- Take Pe Min Kan Wan or other prescribed herbal medicine.
- Drink enough water—at least one quart a day.
- You can also try using a netti pot. Put one cup warm water, 1/3 to l/i teaspoon salt and a pinch of baking soda into your netti pot (available at Cornucopia or Whole Foods). Put the pot in one nostril and lean the other way so it goes out the other way and blow so the water goes out. Keep going in and out, alternating nostrils until the water is out. Do this over a sink or in the shower.
- Use Nutribiotic grapefruit seed extract nasal spray either after the netti pot or instead of it.
- Go off dairy for one month. Alternative choices: soy milk, rice milk, soy yogurt. See recipes by Ron Pickarski in Friendly Foods and Kristina Turner's the Self 1 Healing Cookbook.
- Eat whole grains and rice- especially rice (brown is ok but it doesn't have to be brown) to support the center and help the earth part of your body be strong so it won't produce so much mucous. Cook rice and grains with a few slices of raw ginger and piece of Kombu or kelp.
- Cook all vegetables with a few slices of ginger or scallion to warm the nature of them and keep the energy moving when you eat them.
- Drink fresh ginger tea: peel a piece of fresh ginger the size of your pinky and chop it up. Put it in a pot with 1 quart of water. Bring to a boil and turn down to simmer for 15-20 minutes. Add lemon and honey if desired. This is best done if you have clear or white mucous. If you have dark green mucous, speak with me directly before doing this.
- At work or school bring Westbrae miso packets - drink two cups of miso/day. This will help alkalinize the blood and support your body to create health.
- Use ginger compresses: Use three washcloths to dip into the warm ginger water (above). Ring out excess water with tongs and your hands. Place one across the nose and cheeks, another one on the forehead, and a third washcloth on the back of the neck where the head meets the neck. After treatment, apply mullein oil compound if you have it (available at Cornucopia or Bread & Circus) to the sinuses, lymph channels and back of the neck. Repeat the process 1-3 times daily.
- Choose foods and liquids that are room temperature or warmer. Cold foods deplete your body's resources affecting its ability to heal and your vitality.

How to Make a Ginger Compress |
|
|
|
- Take a 4-6" piece of raw ginger. Grate it From here you can either
(a) Place the grated ginger in a small or baby sock and tie or wrap with a rubber band which will give you a nice, compact compress, or (b) Place it directly into 2-3 quarts of very hot water and bring to a a boil. - Simmer the ginger in the water/sock in the water for 20-40 minutes. Shorter time for use on the chest and sinuses, longer time for use on the belly or kidney area.
- If you used method a), wring out the sock as best you can - tongs work well to squeeze out water; place a towel over the affected area and apply the compress.
- If you used method b) place a kitchen size towel or 2-3 clean cloth diapers in the ginger water.
- Wring out the water, lay a towel on the local area and apply the cloths.
- Once applied, cover the area with plastic wrap or a small trash bag, than a warm blanket
- Rest for 15 minutes then repeat the process making sure the ginger water is hot. This step can be repeated 3-4 times until the area feels quite warm and the skin is flushed It is important to stay wrapped up and warm while the damp towel is on.
- Whether applying a ginger compress to the chest, abdomen, back, neck or kidneys, dress warmly after the treatment to hold in the heat, aid the process and protect your Qi.
- To Warm the Kidneys: use every other day for 10 days followed by 2x a week. After this consult your practitioner.
- For Sinus Infections: use three washcloths to dip in the ginger water. Place one across the nose and cheeks, another one on the forehead, and the third washcloth on the back of the
neck on the occiput and mastoid process. After treatment apply mullein oil compound if you have it to the mastoid processes, sinuses, and lymph channels of the neck. Repeat 3 times. - For Ear Fullness or Irritation: use washcloths for dipping or baby socks filled with ginger. Place behind the irritated ear(s) and one on the occiput After treatment, place 3-5 drops of warm garlic or mullein, olive or a combination in the affected ear.
General recommendations: - For acute problems: Use ginger compresses daily am. and p.m
- For chronic problems: Use ginger compresses every other day for 10 days followed by 2x a week until condition improves.
